light it up blue for Autism awareness month
April is Autism Awareness Month. Students and Teachers dressed in blue to spread awareness across the school we raised over 80 Euros.
In Francis Street we are celebrating diversity and all of our differences.
ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder. This means that no two children diagnosed with Autism are the same. Boys are learning that children with ASD can have difficulty in communicating, social skills and rigidity of thought. Students in Francis Street CBS are developing skills to communicate and make friends with other students who have Autism and encourage inclusion.
Students diagnosed with Autism often have sensory issues. This means that these children have difficulty regulating themselves and flap their arms or rock their bodies back and forth. This helps them calm themselves. We can regulate ourselves by talking about an issue or kicking a ball with our friends. Children with ASD/ sensory issues regulate differently.
Here are some videos explaining what Autism is and we meet the new Sesame Street character.

We have learned about how he likes to sleep, what kind of temperament he has and what his favourite toys are.
We have learned about ourselves too:
We have learned about ourselves too:
- Logan has also helped us to discuss our feelings. We have learned that all feelings are okay. It is okay to feel unhappy/ sad/ worried and we talked about ways to help others who are feeling this way. Although some feelings make us feel good, some are unpleasant. We all share the same feelings and we can help ourselves by telling others how we feel.
- Observing how Baby Logan communicates has helped us to read his body language and facial expressions. We wrote about a time when we or a friend had been bullied and how to deal with our emotions.

pancake tuesday 2017
Today is Pancake Tuesday. Our parents came in to help us make pancakes! We brought our own toppings like nutella, buttons and lemon juice! They were delicious!
Here is the history of Pancake Tuesday!
Pancake Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday is the day before lent begins. It precedes Ash Wednesday and is celebrated by eating pancakes. It is the Christian period leading up to Easter, when people often give up something.
In the past people were not allowed to eat foods such as eggs, so to use them before before the 40 days of fasting began, people would mix them with other rich foods such as milk, flour and butter to make pancakes.
What are your favorite toppings?
